Pre-retail Manager Mark Docherty is this month’s CML employee in the spotlight
Name: Mark Docherty
Job title: Pre-Retail Manager
Where do you live? Coventry, Warwickshire
Department: Pre-Retail & Quality Control
How long have you worked for CML?
Can you sum up an average day in your job (what are your daily tasks, what activities do you spend most of your time doing)?
The nature of our work in the department sometimes needs to be very re-active, when it comes to finding a solution to our customer’s ad-hoc requests. Generally, this may involve re-labelling, re-pricing, re-packing, re-assembling, undertaking quality checks etc.
The routine day for me can encompass area re-layouts, flow lines, developing new processes and methods of operation due to our changing workload and planning and organising the workforce.
I also have the responsibility to provide costings for all new jobs due to come through the department, setting internal productivity targets and reviewing performance levels.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
The variety of the work, not knowing what the next job will be and above all, finding a solution to help our customers.
What do you like most about working for CML?
We are lucky to have a friendly and supportive management team with a workforce who shares the same goals. It’s also great being allowed to manage and develop my departmental team to fulfil their potential.
Personal career highlight of the year?
We had a processing requirement for a customer that needed completing in a week and represented 300% of our planned volume capacity in this time. As a business, we pride ourselves on being flexible, so I am happy to say we were able to adapt and complete this in full and on time within the week.
Are you organising or taking part in any social, fundraising activities with your colleagues inside our outside of work?
One of my supervisors is an active member of the charity committee and so we all support the fundraising activities with enthusiasm. This includes entering a team in the CML ‘Children In Need Marathon’, bringing in unwanted birthday and Christmas presents to sell on the charity table, running weekly football scratch cards and sponsorship of my departmental employees who participate in all of the events.
What are your hobbies or interests outside of work?
My first passion is my five grandchildren who welcome any spare time I can give them to go on days out, play with them in the parks or take them to their weekend after-school activities. On the odd occasion I get a free Saturday I like to go to the races where I enjoy the spectacle and occasionally win a few pounds.
Both my wife and I enjoy socialising at the weekend going out for a meal or popping in the local to meet up with friends.
I enjoy watching all sports, particularly football, but as I am a Coventry City supporter, recent times have not been that good on that front!
