'The people here at CML really do make the business!'
This month's CML employee in the spotlight is Customer Account Manager Michael Smith...
Name: Michael Smith
Job title: Customer Account Manager
Where do you live? Leicester
Department: National Accounts
How long have you worked for CML? 9 years
Can you sum up an average day in your job?
I am quite new to the job, but generally speaking I account manage several of our customers on site, so I am a point of contact for any queries, helping out on any issues or problems the customer may have, and above all trying to ensure that our partnership is proceeding in the most efficient and mutually beneficial manner possible, both commercially and from a service point of view. I will attend periodic visits and conference calls with customers to ensure we are exceeding their expectations and are fully aligned to achieve their objectives, and am responsible for ensuring we are invoicing them regularly and accurately.
My first job is always to go through my inbox so I can assess what I need to prioritise in the day, and add this to anything I already have on my “to-do” list from the night before (I like to be organised). I will also assess what meetings I have for the day and decide how best to fit in everything I need to achieve. After that, it falls into the category of 'get cracking' – after making a cuppa, of course!
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Working daily with our customers. The very nature of the job means that no two days are the same, and that helps make the job an enjoyable challenge every single day. Also, whilst I have been in the industry for over a decade, I have never stopped learning, from colleagues and customers. Every day really does help expand my knowledge and experience that little bit more, which is great as it’s an industry I am passionate and enthusiastic about.
What do you like most about working for CML?
It may sound clichéd but the people really do make the business. It is an absolute pleasure working with so many of the people here internally, and externally with customers, and that’s what makes it such an enjoyable place to work. CML is a very successful and professional company, yet it retains the feel of a tight-knit family run business and I think this is reflected in our service, our company ethos and our day-to-day attitude. I am pleased to say I consider many of my CML colleagues to be my friends as well.
Personal career highlight of the year?
There have been a few in the past twelve months. attending the Retail Week Supply Chain Awards and moving into my current position come fairly close, but I am probably most proud of the work we have done with Finery London. To be involved in a big way in such an exciting and vibrant new brand has been amazing and a great challenge for me personally. I’m genuinely delighted to be their Account Manager going forwards!
Are you organising or taking part in any social, fundraising activities with your colleagues inside our outside of work?
I have been involved in a lot of our charity activities, in various guises. I am proud to play a key role in helping maintain our relationship with Rainbows Children’s Hospice, which is such a great organisation to be involved with as they do some fantastic work. Recently, I also participated in the Children in Need relay. Whilst we didn’t win, I think my running gear deserved a prize for Most Prepared Runner. Unfortunately I did miss the Santa Run this year, but I do always try and take part whenever I can in the various activities we run. Myself and a few colleagues also regularly enjoy a game of badminton at the local gym.
What are your hobbies or interests outside of work?
I am a very keen runner and am currently in training for the Berlin Marathon in September 2015, a day after my 30th birthday. I am running for the Royal British Legion, so I’ll be sure to ask my CML friends to donate generously! Outside of running, I am huge sports fan, especially American Football, Formula One and Football. I am a lifelong fan and season ticket holder at Leicester City, which I am lucky enough to share with my fiancé. I am also a Football Manager addict (a computer game, for the uninitiated) and have been for about 18 years. Whilst strictly speaking not a hobby in itself, I spend so much time on it I think I have to try and justify it somehow……
