Our new Business Apprentice Tom Sanders talks about his first month in the role...
I've recently started working at CML as their Business Apprentice to get an insight into what it's like to work within a large organisation.
At the moment I'm doing a Level 3 Extended Business BTEC Course which focuses on every aspect within a business and CML have enabled me to gain practical work experience whilst completing my studies.
So far I have gone through the induction stage which involved a tour of the site, health and safety meetings and have been informed about the company's emergency procedures.
The first area I have been working in is marketing, where I'm learning how to present the business to a professional standard.
I've been taught how to use Google and Twitter Analytics tools to compare web traffic over a period of months. By using these tools it helps me to get a broader understanding of CML as a business. Every week I'm also involved in a meeting revolving around the weekly freight e-newsletter which the Marketing Manager and I design to send out to potential freight customers.
Recently I have also been placed in the finance department in order to support them with their administration. This has involved inputting data and proof reading statements and invoices to make sure they are correct. Through doing this, I'm learning how the finance department manage payments from the customer.
The finance department staff are lovely too, they always make sure I'm getting on okay and offer me refreshments if I need them; nothing gets you through the day like a slice of cake and a hot chocolate.
I have also been shadowing a member of staff to observe how the operations of the business work as well as understand the role of a superviser within the business. This is providing me with a good overview of how CML operates from both the administration side and the operations side.
From doing this not only did I learn what the supervisor role does, but I also got my first taste of working in operations which is great for when I want to decide which department I'd like to go and further my career in.
